It is worth noting perhaps that the demand this past April was down from the record amount of nearly 3,400,000 coins sold this past March. The numbers were down by about 10,000 in April from the same month in 2009.

Last year both the proof and uncirculated collector's version of the 2009-W Silver Eagle were canceled by the United States Mint because fo the previously unprecedented buyer demand for the bullion version of the coin. As the demand continues to be strong for Silver Eagles, there is a very real possibility that there could be cancellations for the 2010-W American Silver Eagle unless public demand for the coin unless either demand slows down or the supply of the raw silver needed catches up. The promise to the public by the U.S. Mint regarding of the congressionally authorized silver bullion coins is to make them available as a cost effective and convenient way to add a small amount of silver to their investment portfolio.

While the United States Mint doesn't offer the American Silver Eagle bullion coins for sale directly to dealers, collectors and investors, it does release the coins through it's network of authorized purchasers, who then are able to sell the coins to the public.

The design of the obverse was derived from the classic "Walking Liberty" project from Adolph A. Weinman, which originally had been utilized for the United States half-dollar coin from the years 1916 to 1947. While this iconic creation has remained a public favorite - and certainly one of the most cherished designs of the contemporary US coinage (silver or otherwise) - it was restored for the Silver Eagle many years later. The reverse shows a heraldic eagle fashioned by John Mercanti.

The United States Mint has offered Silver Eagles in three major versions. The first is the regular remaining bullion derision of the coin, which is found at coin dealers and authorized bullion dealers. The second version being sold straight from the United States Mint is the collectible proof version. The lataest and most recent version is a collectible, uncirculated edition of the coin, additionally recognized as being the Burnished Silver Eagle. These coins are struck on burnished blanks and carry the famous "W" mint mark.

Silver Eagles are shipped by the Mint in packages of up to five hundred. Every box holds twenty-five tubes with twenty Silver Eagles to each tube. A sealed package weight forty-two pounds and is calculated to be around 15"X9"X5".

From the beginning of the series, Silver Eagles got the attention of not just bullion investors but coin collectors, as well. Silver Eagles are often seen as the modern parallel of Silver Dollars since they are struck in silver and hold a $1.00 face value. Coin collectors are able to assemble the Silver Eagle series by acquiring one coin for every date. There are some collectors who amass sets of high-end coins, which are encapsulated and assigned a grade by services like NGC or PCGS.

The Mint's authorized dealers bought 377,000 Silver Eagles throughout the first eight days of June, which ended on Monday. By Wednesday, the tally for sales amplified up to more than double the amount of 777,000. Then, the count skyrocketed to 930,000 on Thursday, which brought the year-to-date total to a record-breaking rate of 12,509,500.

The current selling pace will take June above the 1.9 million eagles bought throughout May - a month with elevated numbers but astonishingly ranking second from the lowest for silver bullion coin sales this year. That is how great the year 2009 has proven to be for silver coins.

2008 was a giant year for the series with well over 19 million eagles being bought. Unless a turnaround occurs, 2009 might make last year's record performance pale in comparison to this year's record numbers.

The price of silver climbed today  18.3 cents to $13.607 cents. Some experts believe that prices of the precious metal will continue to rise above it's current levels, but are likely to remain shy of the record levels touched in March 2008,  said Chief Executive Officer Dennis Wheeler on Tuesday.

"I wouldn't sit here and forecast new highs for you. But I certainly feel quite comfortable talking about silver in a $16 to $18 range," Wheeler told the Global Mining and Steel Summit in New York.

"There are not very many silver mines coming into production. In fact, we have brought the two largest new silver mines into production over the last nine months -- San Bartolome in Bolivia and near the end of this month Palmarejo in Mexico." said Wheeler.

 Those projects are expected to contribute about 19 million ounces of new silver supply each year. Silver is used in many jewelry, electronics, and medical and industrial applications.

U.S. dollar sell-offs kicked off a rise in silver and gold futures on Monday with February gold rising $17.10 to close at $769.30 an ounce on the NY Mercantile Exchange, with March silver rising 54.5 cents to $9.975.

With equity markets rebounding as of late, analysts say this increased confidence has prompted investors into moving more freely into the precious metals market.

The overall trend is toward the downside, as far as 14.70 remains in place, with a target set at 8.05 and 7.60, while Silver futures for March delivery lost 3.6 cents, or 0.3 percent, to nearly $10.27 an ounce on the Comex.
